"utter disappointment" was a real downer. let's try happy next.
I'm looking for listening recommendations -- songs/shows that lift your spirits.

6-28-76 second set always brings a smile

http://www.archive.org/details/gd76-06-28.shure.minches.18388.sbeok.shnf

Start with the crowd noise before the ultra-sweet eyes of the world which opens with a slow and easy groove and a nice solo from phil, all before the first verse. From Eyes through Around, one sweet long sequence.

And the only Happiness is Drumming

Happiness Is Drumming is absolutely lovely.
There must be more stellar instrumentals here -- any suggestions?

As for stellar instrumentals, here are a few that immediately come to mind:

http://www.archive.org/details/gd1971-02-18.sbd.cantor-crouch-diebert-gmb.85478.sbeok.flac16

the 'Beautiful Jam' just after the first live Wharf Rat is exquisite,

http://www.archive.org/details/gd73-07-27.sbd.miller.27779.sbeok.flacf

the jam before Wharf Rat is one for the ages and the Bird Song is also worth checking out,

http://www.archive.org/details/gd1973-06-10.sbd.miller.89640.sbeok.flac16

and thinking of Bird Songs, I've always found this one from RFK to hit the spot,

Dick's Picks #12 yields two of my favorite instrumentals - the intro jam to China Cat and the long, but never tiresome jam out of Weather Report Suite goes many places and some are quite beautiful.

and a little darker but quite beguiling is this SlipKnot from the first post-hiatus gig in Portland, Or.

http://www.archive.org/details/gd76-06-03.sbd.bertha-ashley.20004.sbeok.shnf

and last, but not least, is the jam coming out of The Wheel and up to the Playin' reprise from 6-29-76 . . . very tight and still sweet - love the spacey, chilled out section near the end

http://www.archive.org/details/gd76-06-29.sbd.bertha.31144.sbeok.flacf

enjoy

The Diga Rhythm Band album was relatively new at that time and WXRT was playing 'Happiness Is Drumming' that week (WXRT broadcast the next night (6-29-76). Those of us who already had the Diga album were elated the Dead were playing it - it fit so naturally in that sequence that night. Pity it was not played more often, it seemed a natural.

"Those magnificent men from Marin county -- the Grateful Dead." made me smile right there -- I always love a Bill Graham intro.
It's a gorgeous Dark Star, I'm listening right now. Thank you!

...but it did bring about this nice thread. I'm feeling the love and I've been listening to the most fabulous music.

I will - want to hear the "most beautiful' from 70, then chase it with the "most badass".
I'm overwhelmed by the choices -- and I have way too many windows open on my computer right now....

cool :)

these are my own artificial labels, of course - there's plenty badass about 6/24.

unless you have dick's picks volume 8 you'll have a hard time listening to 5/2... *crosses fingers*

I've got the dick's pick's vol. 8. It was a favorite cassette of mine back in the days of cassettes.

I think it's about time we devoted another thread to this concert again.

There are so many 1970 beasts (2/13, 5/2, 6/24, 9/19, 11/08) it's impossible to pick the "best" one, but I think this concert might qualify, for me at least, as "most beautiful." For the record, I think 5/2 qualifies for "most badass." (2/13 and 9/19 might tie for "trippiest")

If you're listening to 20 Jan '68 don't forget the Viola Lee and Schoolgirl attributed to this date on Road Trips 2.2.

Being a fan of both, and the fact that it made me laugh, the Huckster gets bonus forum points for today. Cash them in how you see fit.
